ILLUSTRATION 7.4 Cosmic magnifying glass. Abell 2218 (black-and-white version of Color Illustration 7). This behemoth cluster of galaxies has created a giant lens in space that has produced multiple images of over a dozen separate galaxies, all of which lie far behind the cluster. Highlighted in this image are the multiple images associated with three of these background galaxies. (See text for details.)
Abell 2218 is not a simple cluster—instead of one large dent in space (plus lots of little dents from the galaxies), there are two. The main mass of dark matter is centered on the brightest galaxy, and most of the arcs in the image circle about this galaxy. There is a secondary clump of dark matter as well, positioned over the two bright galaxies near the top of the image, about two-thirds of the way from the left edge. Two distinctive arcs can be seen outlining this part of the dark matter lens.
Within this image scientists have found seven confirmed sets of images (and many more that have yet to be examined in detail)—each set consists of multiple copies of a single background galaxy.
